Product Information

Scientific name: Abies x vilmorinii (M. T. Masters, 1901)

Common names: Vilmorin's fir

Tree to 25 m or more tall. Garden plant resulting from controlled pollination or spontaneous hybridization of its parents (Abies cephalonica x Abies pinsapo) growing in cultivation. Like both parents, it has shinning, hairless twigs bearing pointed needles which may have deeply seated resin canals. It differs from Grecian fir (Abies cephalonica) in having prominent rows of stomates on the leaves above and seed cones with a nipplelike tip and bracts barely emerging between the scales or not at all. It differs from Pillars of Hercules fir (Abies pinsapo) in its long needles, 1.5-3 cm long, concentrated to the sides and above the twigs and its seed cones with visible bracts. It was first raised in 1868 by Henry de Vilmorin (1843-1899), head of the famed Vilmorin firm from 1866 until his death, in his nursery at Verriéres after deliberately crossing the parents in 1867.
